Campaign News
Sun Awareness Campaign
The campaign is intended to spread the good news that
skin cancer is largely preventable.
Guernsey has a higher incidence of skin cancer than
the South of England.
Statistics for the Southwest of England between 2003 and 2006 say that 20 people in every 100,000 have malignant melanoma (the dangerous type of skin cancer).
Guernsey statistics for 2003 – 2007 say that our comparable figure would be 24.1 people for every 100,000 having malignant melanoma.
The good news is that fewer Guernsey people die from skin cancer, our figure would be 2 for every 100,000 while the Southwest of England’s figure is 3 people for every 100,000.
In response to the statistics well known sporting and political faces volunteered their help to remind the Guernsey public how to prevent skin cancer and still have fun in the sun.
Director of Public Health, Dr Stephen Bridgman said “I am concerned about the high local rates of skin cancer and would encourage people to follow the advice and reduce their cancer risk”
Some forms of skin cancer are as a result of very short but intense periods of exposure to sun light and others from more prolonged exposure which is why the guidance should be followed no matter how long people are going to spend outside.
The well known locals were chosen by different groups of the Guernsey public who were asked who they would like to see in sun awareness posters. Local students then photographed and prepared the photographs ready for the posters.
Matt Le Tissier said “I would encourage everyone to follow the sun smart messages. They are simple and achievable by everyone, the don’t stop you enjoying the sun and most importantly they help prevent a very serious disease”.
Cancer Research UK recommend everyone follows the sunsmart guidelines in order to help prevent skin cancer, these guidelines form the basis of the posters:
S Spend time in the shade between 11 am and 3 pm
M Make sure you never burn
A Aim to cover up with a T-Shirt, hat and sunglasses
R Remember to take extra care with children
T Then use factor 15+ sun cream
