No Smoking Day

The Health Promotion Unit and Quitline are pleased to announce that this year’s No Smoking Day will take place on 12th March 2008.The theme,“The Great No Smoking Day Challenge” is encouraging those who want to stop smoking to kick start their quit attempt, on or before this date.
Quitting smoking is, for most smokers, the single best way to improve their health – but it can also be one of the greatest challenges. This year’s theme acknowledges that quitting is not easy and challenges smokers to quit smoking and raise money for their favourite charity. The Health Promotion Unit will have sponsorship forms and quit packs for anyone who wants to take on the challenge. To get your free quit pack and / or information about No Smoking Day contact Gerry Le Roy on 707311, email gleroy@hssd.gov.gg or visit the No Smoking Day website on www.nosmokingday.org.uk .
Smokers who are serious about stopping can look forward to these benefits:
- Improve your smile. Smoking can cause yellow teeth, gum disease and bad breath
- Giving up 20-a-day is like a £30 a week or £1,560 a year pay rise! You could save for that luxury holiday!
- The benefits start quickly, and within just 2 days of stopping you’ll start to have more energy and feel fitter
In the lead up to No Smoking Day, in addition to the usual drop in and group sessions, Quitline are offering “Information Sessions” which can be held in the workplace or at the Quitline office. Find out about their free service, Nicotine Replacement Therapy, Zyban and Champix to help kick start any groups of friends and colleagues on their “No Smoking Day Challenge”. Appointments can be made by phoning 233170.
If you would like to be involved in the biggest day for quittiing this year, a poster on/in your office or window can be a helpful reminder to the 75 per cent of smokers who want to quit. If however you would like to organise a big event to raise money for your favourite charity from your quit attempt, we will be happy to support you with resources and information.
